Understanding Analytics

The Analytics page provides comprehensive portfolio analysis and visualization tools to track your financial position over time.

What You'll Find

Chart Views

The Analytics page offers three main chart views:

Chart TypeWhat It Shows
Total AssetsHistorical value of all your assets over time
Total LiabilitiesHistorical debt and outstanding balances over time
Net WorthAssets minus liabilities — your true financial position

Filtering

Each chart view supports powerful filtering options:

  • By Entity - Focus on specific holding companies, trusts, or personal holdings
  • By Asset/Liability - Select individual investments to analyze
  • Date Range - Choose preset ranges (1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y, 2Y, 5Y, All) or custom dates

Recorded Values

Below each chart, you'll find tables showing:

  • Recorded Valuations (for assets) - Manual value records you've entered
  • Recorded Balances (for liabilities) - Outstanding balance records over time

How Values Are Calculated

Asset Valuations

Asset TypeCalculation Method
LoansPrincipal + accrued interest (supports variable rate schedules)
Public StocksLatest market price × quantity
Other AssetsMost recent recorded valuation or purchase value

Liability Balances

Liability TypeCalculation Method
Mortgages & Term LoansAmortization schedule based on payments made
Interest-Only & Bullet LoansPrincipal + accrued interest (supports variable rate schedules)
Credit LinesMost recent recorded balance
Other LiabilitiesMost recent recorded balance or original amount

Interest Rate Changes

For both assets (loans) and liabilities with variable interest rates, the system tracks rate changes over time:

  • Interest rate schedules are stored with effective dates
  • Historical calculations use the correct rate for each time period
  • Charts accurately reflect interest accrual with rate changes

Currency Handling

All values are converted to your base currency for consistent comparison:

  • Exchange rates are fetched for each date point
  • Multi-currency portfolios are accurately consolidated
  • Currency fluctuations are reflected in the charts

Recording Values

For Assets

From an asset's detail page, use the Valuation History section to:

  • View historical valuations as a chart
  • Add new valuations using the "Add Valuation" button
  • Edit or delete existing valuations

For Liabilities

From a liability's detail page, use the Balance History section to:

  • View historical balances as a chart
  • Record new balances using the "Record Balance" button
  • Edit or delete existing balance records

Best Practices

  • Record valuations regularly - Quarterly updates improve chart accuracy
  • Use consistent dates - Quarter-end or month-end dates work best
  • Filter to focus - Use entity and asset filters to analyze specific segments
  • Compare timeframes - Use date range controls to spot trends
